The company started in 1857 by Gail Borden in Connecticut and then moved to New York City under the name New York Condensed Milk Company in 1858. The picture with the jar is the only known and last surviving fully intact condensed milk jar known. It is dated 1858. In 1899 the company changed to Borden's Condensed Milk Co. in 1901 the company was opened by an Italian farmer, Giuseppe Caccioppo, who came to America in 1898. It was the third largest company in NYC after Bordens and Sheffield. The milk was supplied from over 800 farms by over 16,000 cows and then distributed by over 120 trucks. |

In 1903 the Sheffield Farms and the Slawson Decker Co. were rival farm companies located next to each other in the Bronx. L.B. Halsey and Ann Maria Sheffield began the dairy company in 1880. They began by herding cows for a few years in N.J. in 1892 they imported America's first pasteurization machine from Germany. The machine was demonstrated at the Columbian Exposition in 1893 in Chicago. In 1896 the company merged with Slawson Decker. In 1976 the company was bought out by Kraft Foods.
