Bechtel, George, Brewing Co., The
Address: 387 Saint Paul's ave.
George Bechtel was born in Germany in 1840 and in the same year was brought to America. The brewery was founded in 1853 by John Bechtel. George took over his fathers brewery in 1871, destroying all of his fathers old building and making a newer, better facility. George was also an avid democrat, ran for president, and was one of the first members in an anti animal cruelty group. He was a good person among the corrupt members of society in the late 1800s. He donated a large portion of his honest earnings to charity. Upon his death in 1889, he appointed the company to his wife in his will. The company closed down in the early 1900s. Associated with the Bachmann - Bechtel Brewing Co. |
Staten Island
Rubsam & Horrmann Brewing Co.
Address: 191 & 193 Canal st.
The Brewery in which this beer was made was purchased by Joseph Rubsam and August Horrmann from the previous un-recorded owners in 1870. The company was very well known and successful throughout New York but again just like the Eichler Brewing Co, its history was poorly recorded. Although, August Horrmann was committed to a sanitarium, which in the late 1800s was horrible without any humane rules, and killed himself in 1900 with a razor in front of his doctor. It was the result of a family inherited "Melin-Cholia" The company was bought out in 1953 by the Piels beer company and then closed down in 1963 when the Peils company went out of business.
